What it is
Sheet vinyl comes off a roll about two metres wide. It's glued to a flat, dry base. Where two widths meet, the seam is grooved and filled with a melted vinyl rod in a matching colour, which sets flush with the floor.
The result is one continuous surface. There are no grout lines and no gaps, so there's nowhere for dirt, water or germs to settle. That's why it's the standard floor in hospital wards and school corridors.

- Kitchens, laundries and other wet areas, with a coved edge
- Shops and offices that want a floor that cleans quickly
How sheet vinyl is laid
- The base has to be sound, clean, flat and dry.
- Screed or self-levelling compound evens out dips and ridges.
- The rolls rest in the room so they settle to its temperature. Gerflor's guideline is 24 hours.
- The sheet is glued down and rolled so it bonds evenly.
- The seams are grooved and heat-welded with a matching rod.
- Where it's specified, the sheet can be formed up the wall as a coved skirting.
